OpenAI falling behind seems like a cool marketing strategy. Competitors get complacent, then BOOM! Another frontier model drops, trained with tons more pretrained knowledge. Then the pretraining gets stale and competitors get complacent again, then BOOM! Another frontier model drops with even more pretraining! And wait until the cycles get shorter. If I was OpenAI that's what I would do.
